Daniel Bricklin was born in 1951, attended the Akiba Hebrew Academy, graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in computer, electrotechnical and engineering science in 1973. At MIT he worked at the Laboratory for Computer Science, developing interactive programs. At that time he met Bob Frankston.
After MIT he worked at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), where he was involved in keyboard input systems, was project leader of WPS-8 word processing software, helping to develop one of the world's first standalone word processing systems.
In 1976, he left DEC and worked at FasFax Corporation, a small manufacturer of microprocessor-based cash registers.
In 1977 he returned to school but now to receive an M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration, a highly prestigious postgraduate degree) from Harvard in 1979.
During this event he conceived the idea of the spreadsheet, teaming up with his old friend Bob Frankston. Together they founded Software Arts, Inc., in 1979 of which Brickiln served as president from 1979 to 1985. Their product, VisiCalc#### is regarded as the major catalyst for the rapid development and growth of the personal computer industry. VisiCalc was spread on the Apple platform, within the Apple II and on all the microcalculators of the time up to IBM, and on many programmable calculators such as the famous HP. About one million copies of the software were sold during those years.
In 1985, he left Software Arts and founded Software Garden, remaining its president until 1990.
In 1990 he founded Slate Corporation a software development company, with the aim of producing programs for handheld computers, leaving Software Graden.
The company closed after 4 years in 1994.
1994 After closing down Slate Corporation, he returned to Software Garden.
In 1995, he founded a new company, Trellix Corporation, which has since become the driving force behind web publishing technology and one of the top providers of web space for private and small business sites. Its products have been used and sold in tens of millions of copies.
In early 2003, Trellix was purchased by Interland, Inc., a web hosting solutions company for small and medium-sized businesses. Dan Bricklin served as Chief Technology Officer of Interland.
In early 2004 Brickiln returned to Software Garden where he is president.
